Climbing
The climbing on the Costa Blanca is all on limestone (hence Costa Blanca meaning White Coast). The crags range from single pitch, generously bolted, sports routes to almost alpine sized mountain routes with natural gear.

Some of the climbing is of true classic nature. Penon de Ifach, a thousand foot solid lump of rock sticks straight out of the sea and towers over Calpe, the beautiful valley of Sella where you can be surrounded by crisp limestone crags or the awesome Puig de Campana.

Climbing Routes in the Calpe Area

  • Sella - Probably THE classic sport climbing areas in the whole of the Costa Blanca. A huge range of routes covering all grades and lengths.
  • Penon de Ifach - What a classic mountain this is! An absolute must for the Costa Blanca climber.
  • Toix - Easily accessible crags just above Calpe.
  • Altea - Several smallish standalone crags just inland from Calpe and Toix
  • Olta - A suprising under-developed crag considering its closeness to Calpe. Single-pitch sport climbing, high up, with fantastic views.
  • Mascarat Gorge - A huge gorge just south of Calpe through which run many tunnels carrying all the main North-South roads.
  • Echo Valley - A huge area of development in a remote and still largely unspoilt valley.
  • Moraira Sea Cliffs - A largely undeveloped area of sea cliffs just North of Calpe with some climbing restrictions.
  • Segaria - A true new routers paradise with plenty of scope for development at all grades from F3/VD up.
  • Puig Campana - The costa Blanca´s highest mountain and of its longest trad routes.

Mountain Biking
The mountain biking around Calpe and within 1 hours drive in the Guadalest Valley and Sierra Aitana is varied and challenging. There are easy rides like the circuit of Guadalest Reservoir (Embalse de Guadalest) and many harder outings which tackle the mountain passes and summits.

Mountain Bike Routes
The following routes all start in Abdet, they are all graded * (easy) to ***** (strenuous)

  • Serella Grand Traverse***** A spectacular ride through the Serella peaks taking in high forest tracks, long climbs and rapid descents. Distance: 40km on forest tracks, roads, with a short section of footpath. Height Gain: 1000 Metres
  • Aitana Summit Adventure **** A challenging ascent followed by a superb varied descent on tracks and paths all the way from the highest tracks in the Aitana Mountains to Abdet. Distance: 25kms on forest tracks, roads, with an entertaining section of footpath through a boulder field. Height Gain: 850M
  • The local walk ** around the pinnacles and rocky valley makes a great 1 hour MTB ride. Mainly on tacks and minor roads with a short technical descent.  approximately 5 km for this circuit
  • The Obria Solaro walk makes an excellent 2 to 3 hour mountain bike ride ** . Steady climbing on roads followed by fast descending on forest tracks with a short technical section. Distance would be approximately 15 km for the full circuit
  • Aitana - Finestrat Mountain Biking Circuit ***** This ambitious route tackles three major cols and takes in some of the best views in the region. Distance 40km Height Gain: 2,000M

Calpe is situated within a one hour drive of various Golf courses. The courses range from 9 to 18 hole.
